Refund status

Accordingly to CRA’s website:

It is CRA’s goal to issue a notice of assessment, including any applicable refund, within:

  • 2 weeks of receiving your electronically filed return

  • 8 weeks of receiving your paper filed return

  • 16 weeks of receiving your non-resident paper filed  return

These timelines are only valid for returns received on or before their filing due dates.

How you can check the status of your refund

Go online

  • Use the MyCRA mobile application

  • Call - You can check on your refund/return by calling the CRA's Telerefund line at 1-800-959-1956 or the Tax Information Phone Service (TIPS) line at 1-800-267-6999

To use Telerefund be ready to give:

  •  your social insurance number;

  • your month and year of birth; and

  • the total income you entered on line 150 of your 2017 return (if you are calling before May 1);

  • the total income you entered on line 150 of your 2019 return (if you are calling on or after May 1st)

What can I do if I am late filing?

Tax returns for tax year 2018 and prior must be mailed to CRA .

 Late-filing penalty may apply.

  • If you owe tax for 2019 and you file your return for 2019 after the due date,  CRA will charge you a late-filing penalty

  • The penalty is 5% of your 2019 balance owing, plus 1% of your balance owing for each full month your return is late, to a maximum of 12 months
